How to Find Oneself in a Queer Cuddle Puddle? Theory & Practice

Can we go from strangers to cuddling each other in four hours? What would need to transform for that to happen? This pleasure garden explores conditions that allow people to stay in self-connection (internalised dignity, safety and belonging) while reaching for external connection and negotiating closeness. It utilises the register of education – its implied pacing, structure and support – to invite participants into risk-taking and vulnerable practice of cruising, in this case “cuddle cruising.”

The piece concerns itself with widespread touch starvation, systemic isolation and the organised abandonment of our needs by the state that inevitably results in compromised relational skills and alienation. It explores meeting touch and closeness needs outside romantic dyads and conventions of desirability. The work comprises a written piece called The Spell, performed aloud, an ambient cuddle mixtape, and an installation with painted placards.
